The theme this year was “Cirque du SUNFest,” a play on “cirque du Soleil,” which means “circus of the sun.”
Events during the week included a comedian; the Mr. SUU pageant; bingo with great prizes; a showing of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; a carnival with fun bouncy inflatables, free food, carnival games, prizes, and live music; the Thunderbird Awards Ceremony; and a masquerade ball.
I love dancing. Any time I have an excuse to go dancing is a good time. Sometimes I’ll go to rather sketchy places if I know there’s going to be dancing. When I found out about the masquerade, you can imagine how excited I was to go.
I went with my dancing friend Ali (whenever there’s a dance beat, chances are you’ll see us together) and our outfits matched. Unintentionally.
At the dance (which was free!) I ate lots of cookies and fruits and vegetables, danced, sweated, and got some photos done in a photo booth.

You can see our love we have for dance depicted in this photo with vogue-ing and jazz hands. The other two are just… great.
I love the great activities and events SUUSA does.
Au revoir!

OK here is the deal. Lets go save some lives! Who is with me?
Want to know how? It’s called Sweat for Clean Water.
For those out there who don’t know, I write for another blog called Southern Utah Hiking. It is about hiking here in Southern Utah (seems to match the name, right). I recently wanted to make a difference in the world so I came up with this event and now I need your help.
Instead of retyping everthing here is the info.
Welcome everyone to the first annual “Go out and Explore” Day put on by me here at Southern Utah Hiking and Trails360.com. I hope you are all excited because I am! What we are doing is going out and hiking Calf Creek Falls out in Escalante Utah.
Along with this we are going to do a fundraiser for a charity group called Charity: Water. All those who donate will get a free T-Shirt. We are trying to raise 1000 dollars which will put upwards of 50 new wells so that people can have fresh drinking water.
Location- Calf Creek Falls, Escalante Utah
Time:10:00 AM
Date: June 29th, 2013
In order to for proper registration I need everyone to go the site, and follow the registration instructions

Called to Serve

The feet marched to the sound of the call. What call you might ask? The call to action! The call to serve! And the thunder came and the T-Birds arrived to do their civil duty to those who fought in a war that eventually made up “the greatest generation.”
Hopefully you liked my flowery introduction to a service project I had the opportunity to be apart of. I currently belong to the Cedar City Young Single Adult 10th Congregation for the LDS church. My job is to plan Monday night activities. When the congregational leader (bishop) asked if we could do this activity for a Monday activity, I was happy to let them take over the evening.
So at 5 o’clock we gathered together our congregation and one other, which all are SUU students, and headed out to the service project. The project was to help out a World War II veteran named Ravena. She use to fly planes from the factories out to California to be shipped across sea’s and to the front line. That was cool to find out.
When we arrived we found out the project; which was to help bring her yard back to life. At the age of 90 it becomes very difficult to maintain your yard, so we were called in to save the day. With chainsaws, shovels, rakes, and willing hands we went to work.
It was a great service project, and everyone had a fantastic time. There is always someone out there that we can help, and we T-Birds are always excited to help. Hope everyone had a happy Easter and enjoy the rest of your week.
Viva! Las Vegas

It’s my home and I love it here.
However, it is nice to get away for a bit, especially when it’s your friend’s birthday!
Las Vegas, Nevada is only 175 miles away, or 2.5 hours driving time, according to GoogleMaps.
Ten of us friends went to Las Vegas to spend time together and celebrate Nick’s 21st birthday!
We stayed in Circus Circus. Friday night we were going to party like 1999 and decided to walk from Circus Circus along the Strip to Excalibur for dinner. I wanted to drive because I was pretty sure the distance was a lot further than anticipated, but, in the end, I was glad we walked because we became closer friends and had some pretty awesome things happen.
Awesome thing #1: While enjoying the wonderful 80° F weather on our walk, a gentleman had the top down in his convertible and was blasting music. And it was good music. So I said, “Thanks for the tunes!” and he pointed to me and sang to us as we walked by. That made my day

Awesome thing #2: This black gentleman came up to us while we were taking photos and said we needed some color in the picture. It was great!

And then he took one of the whole group!
I love nice people
Back row LtoR: Martin, Abby, Nick, Jenni, Braden, Scott. Front row LtoR: Chris, me, Cadence, Adam!
We were walking to Excalibur to eat at Dick’s. It’s a restaurant where the servers are intentionally mean and swear at you and throw things at you and it’s quite the experience. They also make really inappropriate hats for you to wear. I, however, have a filter when it comes to posting things on the Internet so I will only be posting a photo of my hat, which was the only appropriate one made….

This is the only hat that I want photos of on the Internet. It says “Maybe if I cut my hair people would stop mistaking me for a 12 year old girl.” This is my “12 year old girl” pose.
After dinner and drinking lots of water (I don’t drink alcohol. Notice how the pitcher I’m drinking right out of is water? I was super thirsty), six of us went to a dance club and danced the night away! It was the most fun!

After a long night of walking, eating, laughing, dancing, and have the best time ever, Nick was tired so Martin carried him to our hotel room on his shoulders.
Of all these people on the trip, there was only one that I didn’t know because of SUU. Every day it is hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that I have the best friends in the world.
Thank you, SUU, for giving me friendships that I will value forever.
Kick Ball

Spring is in the air and it’s time to go out and play… Sorta. I still have tons of homework to be working on, but a break is good for the soul.
Last Thursday I got a text from a friend inviting me out to go play kick ball in the Upper Quad here on SUU’s Campus. I jumped on that idea real fast because I love playing kick ball, so when Friday came I was geared up in shorts and a t-shirt and was ready to go.
At five o’clock we met and set up our teams and the games began. I was the first kicker and sent a huge kick into the right field. Most people were not expecting that because they didn’t know that I use to play soccer and still have a good leg on me. From that point on it though, I no longer had that advantage so I had to really try to control my kicks.
The game went on for about an hour and a half and in the end I think our team won by a few points, but we stopped keeping track after 40 minutes or so.
Over all it was a blast! I was sore all weekend because of it, but that’s all apart of the fun and games of it all.

One of my best friends, Abby, had that opportunity, too. She was in The Sleeping Beauty ballet presented by Cedar City Junior Ballet. She was one of the fairies and I was so proud of the work she did.
My other friend, Alex (from this post) was also in it as Aurora. It really was a splendid production. The costuming, makeup, adaptation, and set were all exquisite.
Photography was not permitted in the theatre, so here’s the link to Parker Grimes Photography and you can see some great shots of the ballet.
Things I Learn From Horses
Posted: March 19, 2013 Filed under: Experiential Education, Student Life | Tags: cedar city, college, consistency, horsemanship, horses, Life lessons, southern utah, southern utah university, suu, SUU Farm, tbirdnation, UT, utah 2 Comments »Life lessons come in the most interesting places some times. We often think they should come from our hard classes, our teachers, our parents, but I recently have been getting mine from horses. Let me explain.
So I take a Horsemanship class here at SUU, and I love it. I first began taking this class because I wanted experience working with large animals and for fun, but the more I go the more I gain in new ways. I remember what the teacher said at the beginning Horsemanship 1
“The things you learn here will help you in more then horse back riding. It will help you in your school, your relationships, your family, and dealing with your children.”
I did not get that statement at first. It was foreign. I could not see how riding horses could effect every aspect of my life. I of course was only beginning a relationship at that time and was not far into it like I am now. I also was a good student, how could this class help me there besides boosting job potential and adding another credit, I did not know. And I definitely did not have a family and kids to take care of, so I felt like it was a cool statement but nothing more then that.
But now that it has been a few months I am beginning to see things in a new light and it all began a few weeks ago. I was trying to ride with proper technique , (Poorly might I add) and in the process I got beat up… badly. I came home from horsemanship sore. My butt hurt, I had rubbed the inside of my legs raw, and I was stiff for days. Later as I was speaking with the teacher he said that we sometimes have to beat ourselves into submission before we realize that what we are doing is wrong.
Lesson 1- Life hurts sometimes and its usually caused by our own mistakes. Recognize them and change.
Lesson two came from an incident when trying to catch the horse. Catching the horse means going out into the pasture and “catching” it. Well I went out there and made some mistakes when it comes to body language and let the horse become confident in that he was the boss and I was not. Well that is not good. When working with horses there is always the relationship of who is boss and who is taking orders.
When the horse is boss, he does what he wants and you have a miserable time. When you are boss, the horse is happy and so are you. Well I did not come across as boss, and it was a ruff start of a day. After the teacher had some one on one with the horse, the horse began acting like he should and it went smooth from that point out.
Lesson 2- Be the boss of your situations. If you are in a study group and no one is taking charge, step up. Be the leader, be the one to spear head activities. It takes a leader to ride a horse, it takes a leader to survive in this world today.
Lesson three came over a period of time but took me two consecutive classes of being beat up by my horses to begin to understand it. When exercising one of the most important things you can do is be consistent. In school it is important to be consistent. In dating someone it is important to be consistent. It dealing with those around you it is important to be consistent especially your kids (if you have them or soon to have them).
When riding horses it is important to be consistent.
I have been too inconsistent when riding my horses. I was not giving the animal consistent cue’s, I was not sitting properly and moving in time consistently. Thus I got beat up… really badly.
Lesson 3- Be consistent. We all have been back and forth in our lives, and that can be good, but be consistent on how you interact with those around you. Why? Because it can end up hurting you.
Those are my life lessons I have for you guys.
Till next week, have a great life, and use these lessons.

Especially the performing arts. I love singing, violin, and acting.
My favorite thing was when I could combine all three of those things into one: musicals!
Well, maybe not the violin, but singing and acting for sure (although, we did do Fiddler on the Roof. But I wasn’t the fiddler).
SUU does many fantabulous productions in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, but due to my other interests and ridiculously busy life, and the fact that I am not a theatre arts major, I have chosen not to audition for SUU shows (in retrospect, I wish I had).
But guess what?
I’m going to be in a musical and I’m freakin’ excited!
I haven’t been in a play since 2008, so it’s been a while, for sure.
The production is being put on by Cedar Valley Community Theatre and it is Hello, Dolly! I was cast as Barnaby.
Events that happen in Cedar like this one are evidence that SUU is a major integral part of the community.
For example, CVCT’s board of directors: four out of the seven have direct ties to SUU.
Hello, Dolly!‘s cast?
Dolly: adjunct professor of voice at SUU
Ernestina: SUU student
Ambrose: SUU student
Ermangarde: SUU alumna
Cornelius: SUU student
Barnaby: Me!
Rudolph: SUU student
Ensemble: half!
And some of my best friends are in it!
I think it’s fantastic that so many SUU students go out and find a place in the Cedar City community.
Sooooooo if you want to see the show, performances are May 30 & 31 and June 1 & 3. I’m not advertising. Don’t worry
Now I have a sudden desire to watch Wall-E.
Juniper Hall: The end

But I know many people who did. People who lived in Juniper, LOVED Juniper. Last year there were some irreparable problems and they had to move everyone out mid-semester. Yesterday, a part of every former-Juniper-resident’s heart was torn into little pieces as SUU said goodbye to the building forever.
The good news is that there are still many wonderful residence halls on campus and hundreds (or thousands) of off-campus housing options. Someday there will be a Juniper Hall replacement. In the meantime, you have my permission to cry just a little bit. Or a lot. (Or cheer if you’re one of THOSE people.) All emotions are welcome when an era ends. Goodbye Juniper Hall…here’s to the future of SUU student housing.
